Sunsation Barberry Japanese Barberry, (Berberis thunbergii)
Description: These deciduous shrubs, with their spiny stems and yellow wood, grow upright and compact. Their leaves are simple and the yellow to dark orange-red flowers will amaze you. New growth starts out greenish yellow than turns golden.
Size: 3-4 ft tall and 3 ft wide (0.9-1.2 m x 0.9 m)
Climate: Sun to part shade.
History: Discovered by Henry Eiler in Illinois and introduced in about 1985 by Monrovia Nursery.
Berberis: from berberys, the Arabic name for the fruit.
